Miyakojima Paradise Blog

French National living in Miyakojima – A small Paradisiac Japanese Island in Okinawa

Since starting offering studio accommodation here, we have had many requests for excursions and marine activities. The most sought after is our Snorkeling Tour. Many of our customers know about snorkeling but it gets way much more impressing when you snorkel among coral full of tropical fishes.

Starting this Summer, we offe rsnorkeling tours on average twice a week in one of the most famous location on the island for tropical fishes. You will find there as much fishes as in 7~8 m deep diving spots, without the constraint of diving equipment.

The tours takes half a day, from 1 pm until early evening. There are one or two leaders of small groups of participants, a maximum of six, in orde to secure maximal safety.

The snorkeling zone is also perfect for all levels of competence, from beginners to savvy snorkelers.

Here are some video shot during such a tour.

There are many “nobody shops” in the Japanese countryside. These are small stalls usually located close by fields where farmers around put fruits or vegetable for sale. There are no shop keeper. You choose what you want and you leave money in a box.

While visiting the South-East end of Miyakojima at low ebb, I found a really huge and impressive coral cluster several hundreds meters long.

The current trend for sherbet comes in the form of a small inflatable plastic balloon with sherbet inside. It is actually a mix of sirup and water which is quit refreshing but definitely not to my taste. It only costs JPY 100 and does not compare with the 31’s and the likes icecreams around. With a smell of plastic and a long list of artificial ingredients, you will remember the coolness but not the taste.

There is a secret beach in Miyakojima. It is mentioned nowhere on any map, and pretty difficult to find. You really need to know the island to locate it. But after crossing some obstacles, you land onto a 2 km long beach featuring a lagoon with unbelievably pure water and sand so white it feels like walking on flour.

The weather that day was not optimal but we went there with my wife and baby to mark the sixth month anniversary of our daughter. Here are a few teasers pictures before I release in a few more days the “postcard like” version.

I have been away from the computer these past days. Maintaining this blog takes quite a lot of time while we have received many reservations for our studios accommodation. It is hard to manage both sides.

But I pledge I will rite more soon.

This is both my work and afterwork outfit. I still have lingering memories of shopping in Tokyo where I would spend hefty amounts of money for brand clothes (GUCCI, Prada, etc.)

This period of my life is now far away even if my current wears are branded, but of lesser prestige.

I wear most of the time the following:

Short,  tank top from UNIQLO (JPY500 a piece bought by three), tongs (JPY300, usually good for a week), and cap. I have several sets of these as wit the local heat, the sand and the sea, one must change clothes two to three times a day (more if you get out at night).

What you definitely don’t need :

Jeans (you’ll melt in 30 minutes)
Socks (unless you want to jog with sport shoes)
And of course any overcoat or anything beyond a teeshirt or short sleeves shirt

…left-handed. otherwise it must be hard to write…

I was invited summoned at an evening event pretty hype (somewhat not top) where I had to swap tongs for “serious shoes” (my wife was worried because I had not weared anything but tongs for the past four months). To sum up, it was an elite soirée of Miyakojima high society (they were in needs of foreigners props but the six other Westerners in the island somewhat escaped).

Now I was standing in front of Miss Miyakojima and two things came to my mind :

1. I was in front of a Michael Jackson sort of clone (see the glove?)

2. I was standing in front of the alien character in Luc Besson’s movie “The Fith Element” (the one who sings on a boat)

When she asked me: “Do you go to the beach from time to time”, I could not find a proper answer …
